Cookie recipe #2
(The second in a four-part series – the Walsh family cookie recipes for the Christmas Season.)
This chocolate crackle cookie recipe is a great introduction for young kids into the baking world. It’s simple to make and offers a great spoon and bowl licking opportunity.
These are very tasty cookies and really hard to screw up, just don’t over-cook them and make sure you don’t add the sugar to the mixture accidentally (which I’ve done). The sugar is just a coating you put on post-rolling.
2 packages (1 lb., 2.5 oz) devil’s food cake mix
4 eggs, slightly beaten
2 teaspoon water
1 cup vegetable shortening
(1 cup granulated sugar, do not use in mixture)
Combine cake mix, eggs, water and shortening. Chill.
Shape dough into small, walnut-size balls.
Roll balls in a bowl filled with granulated sugar.
Place on greased baking sheets, 2 inches apart.
Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes
Yields approximately 96 cookies, 2” cookies
